The community of Coquille, Oregon is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Mariah Mayfield, 18, who tragically passed away following a devastating two-vehicle collision on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, along Highway 101 in Coos County.
According to the Oregon State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 2:48 p.m. near milepost 260 when a white Mercedes E400 was reportedly traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. The vehicle narrowly avoided colliding with a Bandon Police Department patrol unit and another motorist before authorities attempted to intervene. Investigators say the Mercedes struck a guardrail, re-entered the southbound lane, and collided head-on with a blue Mazda Mazda3 driven by Mariah Mayfield.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but despite their efforts, Mariah was pronounced dead due to the severity of her injuries. The driver of the Mercedes, identified as 78-year-old Bernard Cooley of Bandon, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The highway was closed for approximately three hours as officials worked to secure the scene, assist those involved, and conduct a preliminary investigation. Multiple agencies, including the Bandon Police Department, Coos County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation, assisted in the response and ongoing investigation.
